Illustrator tends to be used more for print designs due to being vectors and unlimited scaling, but you can create some truely outstanding stuff in Illustrator for practically anything. Do a Google image search for "vector art" and you'll see some stupidly impressive stuff.

Use the Direct Selection tool (white arrow) and "draw" a box around the two points that you need to join... then hit the cmd+L and cmd+J as he said.
