KCBS anchor Ann Martin visits the Dervaes family amazing edible estate. Living off the land doesn't mean moving to the country. The Dervaes family has taken it upon themselves to grow as much of their diet right on a typical urban lot. Over a decade ago, the family smothered their traditional lawn and transformed their city lot into an amazingly productive edible estate. The family's 1/10 acre garden provides them with all the vegetables, herbs and fruit needed for their vegetarian diet, as well as a viable income. In the summer, their "100 foot diet" consists of nearly 80%-90% of homegrown produce. Even though their garden may be small, it's hugely productive, yielding over 3 tons (6,000 lbs) of food.Visit their website and be inspired to grow your own at www.PathtoFreedom.comSince the early 80's the Dervaes family has slowly transformed their ordinary city lot into a self sufficient urban homestead.

Thank you for posting your videos so we can all learn from you and your family. Did you plan everything out on paper before building or just go as you went? It looks so planned and structured. Great job looking forward to more videos!

Im a vegan and eat oraganic. It makes so much more sense to grow fruits and vegetable and herbs with your flowers instead of boring grass and shrubbs. For the life sustaining effects, obviously and how more interesting visually. The scent of fresh smelling vegetation is so wonderful. Masterfully done.

I grew up like this in Jamaica, but moving to the US 28 years ago I lost touch with nature, but I have since returned back to my roots and am in transition to veganisim. with all the damage being done to mother earth and food souce. man in his attempts to play god, will be brought to his knees and must return to nature and natural way of living, this was the ancient past and will be the future, you are truly an inspiration. keep those videos coming!!

I had no idea you could grow so much on so little land! I'm so impressed!

Thank you so much for doing what you do. Not only is your model an inspiration to all but a genuine way of changing things not just from the level of society but in the very essence of the individual.I'm also glad that you reach out to people over the Internet and make yourself accessible to those who are interested in starting their own home grown revolution.

Thanks for an informative, well-made video on this important - and fun - topic.

this is a very inspiring videoi harvest my own "medical herbs" and its time i started growing food too. being self sufficient and living an "off the grid" lifestyle is the only way as this country continues its downward spiral. my generation is the future and we must all contribute to mankind and the planet, not to the corporations

Fascinating. No, I didn't know that. But I'm learning...bit by bit. Thanks!
