That one piece where Maclean sings about Vang Gogh's suicide is as haunting as it is moving; I almost cried the first time I heard it, cried for Vincent, for my own conceits. It really puts into perspective the scourge of mental illness.

Van Gogh was mentally ill, on the perennial edge of madness, and the song talks about the hopelessness of being horizontally parked in a parallel universe, trying to conform/survive. The composer's supposition is that through his art Vincent was trying to communicate/stabilize, but he couldn't. Yes Van Gogh "suffered." You can read about him at wikipedia

I've listened to this song many times - cried the first time I heard it. It was so beautiful but to this day I don't get what the message behind the song was. I understand Van Gogh suffered but what message is Don McLean talking about?

I used to sing this at karaoke some years ago when I used to go. Very powerful and sad song. Hope I gave it justice.

Poor Van Gogh, he only sold a pair of works, no more... The price of vanguardism...
