As is so often the case with musical groups, they had irreconcilable musical differences, which you can hear in their solo careers. Although Paul had a few hits, neither of them was all that successfull after the split. Every time they re-unite, and they do that often, they sonsistently produce magic. If you compare their different versions of "Sounds of Silence" on Youtube, you can hear them evolving.
